Toyota delayed the release of the plug-in version of its hybrid star, the Prius. The plug-in version, called Prius Prime, should start their business career this fall in Japan, then in winter reach other markets like the United States and Europe.
The Toyota Prius Prime finally goes on sale this winter. Toyota has not given a specific date nor explained the reasons for its decision. According to Reuters, Toyota will reduce the initial production of the Prius Prime, with respect to the initial figures, then go increased the pace depending on demand.
A cold reception of the Prius in Western markets
Sales of the new Toyota Prius off not just in the US, since its introduction in February (are down 10% compared to 2015). Analysts attribute it to the low price of gas makes the US customer by decanting so precious SUV. Still, the Prius remains the country's best-selling hybrid.
In Europe, the situation is somewhat different, because Toyota gives priority to the rest of its hybrid range, with an offer in major market segments, rather than the Prius. For example, in Spain only sold 350 units in 2016.
In Japan, the Prius is number 1 in sales
These figures surprise and even more when we look at sales in Japan. There, the new Prius is number 1 in sales since the beginning of 2016. Perhaps this is the reason why Toyota slows down the output market Prius Prime: not subtract success Prius in its first year of sale and see if just take off in the United States.
NEW PRIUS NOT IN US THE WELCOME WAITING IN TOYOTA. AND THAT'S A PROBLEM WHEN THROWING THE PRIME PRIUS.
And, according to Koji Toyoshima (Prius chief engineer), Toyota expects to sell 60,000 units per year of Prime Prius worldwide; 30,000 units in Japan and almost as much in the United States, Europe remains a marginal market for the Prius Prime. That is, without the United States, Prime Prius profitability would be greatly diminished.
